Our Faves: Music 2021 (so far) pt. 1

Writer's picture: Twelve 12Twelve 12

It’s officially June, which means half the year(?!) is over. *sigh* Honestly, the days are passing by so fast, it’s crazy.

When we look back at the year so far, all we can think about is the AMAZING music released. There were some absolute bangers that definitely need a shout-out... Here are our faves:

January

January was kicked off by (G)-Idle, Victon, and Treasure, who all made their comebacks on Jan 11. *squeals*

HWAA was the title track for (G)- Idle’s 4th mini album and was an amazing comeback, in terms of visuals, sound, and concept. The whole idea of rebirth like a phoenix was super cool and the girls looked so beautiful in all their stages! The mini-album also featured a rearranged version of HANN, which we loved!

Bobby’s second studio album is everything he dedicated to his life in 20’s, from his worst days to the happiest ones. The Title U-Mad is a diss track calling to all his haters. (“WHYY YOOU MAD SONNNN”) The MV is literally a movie that you must watch! That cute potato trained like an MMA fighter for it, and the end results were sooo cool.

Victon’s song What I Said was so catchy, we were playing it on repeat for days. Also, the choreography and M/V were stunning!

Treasure’s first album was AMAZING. I Love You was their title track, which is THE song to get hyped to. The song also marks the birth of the LED screen in YG’s dance practice rooms, making the YG dance practices go from legendary to LEGEN-wait for it- DARY.

Epik High also returned with their album Epik High is Here part 1. Honestly, this was one of our much-anticipated comebacks and oof. Our favorite track was definitely Rosario, with the epic ;) CL, and Zico featuring on it.

Hyuna drops the album, in prime condition, and honestly, looking at her performance you wouldn’t even know she just recovered from a health issue. Giving us catchy lyrics and moves worthy of a TikTok trend. Also, this EP has the fabulous song ‘Party, Feel, Love” ft Dawn, and it is a song to swoon for. The song is even more iconic, now that she and dawn are going to be debuting as a duo soon!!!! *couple goals*

February

Ahhh February, the month of love….pfff...no... it was lowkey thirst month, with all these comebacks. (No, seriously... some of these comebacks were kinda... NSFW hehe) But seriously, they fire...

Chung Ha released a full album!!! And it was so good! (like, duh) But really tho, Chung Ha really surprised everyone this time with her title track Bicycle. The whole theme, the rap, and the lewks... she slayed. The album also features her singing in Spanish (Guaynaa)! She definitely showed all her colors with the album, and we can’t wait to see what else she has in store.

NCT is never off the year list, it has units to cover each quarter throughout the year and I don’t think the members of NCT127 got enough rest when they prepared for their Japanese 2nd mini album LOVEHOLIC!! Bop as always man….our most repeated track would be Chica Boom Boom, Pronounced: Chika boom boom (Listen to Mom, Tae).

Sunmi released 2 new songs, and both of them were sooo good. Tail was EVERYTHING, and the highlight for us was definitely the choreography (the studio choom one) and the song itself was so witty, and catchy. We also loved the other track, What the Flower... be sure to watch the live performances here!

Big Naughty also released his first full-length album, Bucket List and he really shined. With his title, Joker (ft. JAMIE!) he really proved that he’s an amazing actor, besides being a talented rapper and singer.

Kang Daniel wrapped up his colors trilogy with Yellow. What caught our eye (or, ears lol) was the fact that Yellow represents the streetlights one would look at when walking alone at night. Paranoia was an instant favorite, especially the concept, which was based on Inception. Kang Daniel coming back also meant promotions on Jessi Showterview, which, as expected, was chaotic and fun to watch!

Shinee is back! Shinee is back! Shinee is back! Back! bac--- After 2 and half years since The Story of Light, OT4 is back with a 7th mini album. Shinee has their own style of music from group debut to their solos, but for this, they tried to set into the mainstream choosing a genre quite different from their old songs.

March

Like someone on the internet said, “...We vibe but on the aggressive side”. Azeez set the stage on fire with their new song, Firework. As usual, they went all out, despite preparing for their Kingdom performances. As for the rest of the album, it was actually pretty calm compared to the title track.

Baekhyun owns the R&B genre bro, every album tops the other and it is just the third one before he enlisted in his mandatory military.

Rose finally made her solo!! Both her tracks were completely in English, and the vocals, MV and choreography literally had us on the ground. hehe

IU, goddess….cue angelic music….you can't choose a favorite from this album, all her songs are bops. There are no skips and the lyrics are so relatable.

WayV also had a comeback with their mini-album Awaken the World and the title song Kick Back. While the song is super catchy, we definitely loved the b-side track Action Figure which we still think deserves an MV.

Pentagon released the album Love or Take. A super emotional album, especially because it was Hui's last album (for now) before he enlists to the mandatory military. As catchy and addicting their songs are, Do or Not was as fluffy as cotton candy

Seori dropped a new single, Lovers in the Night, and as expected, her dreamy voice just grabs your attention. We also loved the super diverse and inclusive MV, so check it out!

Weeekly….tell us if this song isn’t stuck in your brain...even now!! It was so good and they so deserve all that recognition they are receiving now!

Jessi, fierce as ever, made her comeback with What Type of X (imma dIFFeRENT type of BEAst), and it is literally THE song to play when you're feeling down. P Nation really grabbed artists like pokemon.

March also saw the official debut of indie-singer Dhee, with her track Enjoy Enjaami. The Tamil track, featuring rapper Arivu, is upbeat, catchy, and has powerful lyrics. Dhee was also the first artist to be unveiled under A.R. Rahman's new tech platform, Maajja, which aims to "help resource-bereft artistes widen their reach".

That's it for now! Stay tuned for part 2!
