House of Salt and Sorrows : Book Review

Writer's picture: L.SL.S

With all the colleges reopening and everyone returning to their normal routines, we wanted a way to constantly keep in touch and talk with each other, and that is how the book club started (a brilliant suggestion from A.M ). This is the first book we took up as a part of our book club which we began this year. So, let's get started right away.

To give a small introduction, the book starts off on a somber mood with a family attending a funeral. The main protagonist Annaleigh, and her family mourn for her sister's death. Unfortunately, this was not the first death in her family, they were the Thaumas Dozen, but now only seven out of the twelve sisters remained. Annaleigh's family is one of the most respected families on the island, but due to the deaths, rumors started going around that family is cursed.

**Spoilers Ahead**

The book includes a curse, possible murders, supernatural elements and many more surprises. The mystery regarding the deaths of her sisters, the beautiful descriptions of dances, their gowns, the festivals & the celebrations and the ghosts, had us guessing all the time. The whole truth behind the dances was mind blowing. The supernatural elements were least expected, so when they were revealed half way through the book, we were really thrown off for a moment.

Overall the book was a good read, it had grabbed our attention from the start. But, there were some aspects in the book that felt too sudden, for example, when they revealed about Cassius's powers and the whole story about the Gods. For us the book took a sudden turn from being a mystery to a supernatural genre at that point onwards, which had both its pros and cons.

All in all, the read was worth it, had us excited and craving for the next chapter. The climax of the book was very gripping, with the truth behind each incident surprising all of us.
